Changes to Mandatory Standards

June 10, 2021

Button batteries present a range of consumer safety risks. Button batteries are especially hazardous for young children. If swallowed by a child, button batteries can cause serious injury or death.

It’s why, following a multi-year investigation by the ACCC, new mandatory standards are being introduced to improve safety to help reduce the risk of young children accessing button batteries. eBay Australia has welcomed these changes which require products to have secure battery compartments to prevent children from gaining access to the batteries. In addition, manufacturers must also undertake compliance testing to demonstrate batteries are secure, supply higher risk batteries in child-resistant packaging, and place additional warnings and emergency advice on packaging and instructions.
