eBay has been a vocal opponent of Congress\' plan to levy new Internet sales taxes on some of our favorite small business retailers (including eBay sellers and buyers). Since eBay VP Tod Cohen spoke out last week, many other companies and advocacy groups have joined the effort.

Last week, a subcommittee of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee took an important step forward in strengthening the long-term financial health of the U.S. Postal Service by passing H.R. 5746, the United States Postal Service\'s CSRS Obligation Modification Act of 2010. The bill could provide financial relief to the Postal Service and hopefully to online retailers like eBay sellers and buyers. A bill before Congress would require online businesses like eBay and its sellers to collect sales taxes — for 45 states and as many as 15,000 local jurisdictions. This is not the time to introduce a new tax. Sign the petition and say NO to new Internet tax burdens.

eBay\'s Tod Cohen, Vice President of Global Government Relations, argues that a streamlined sales tax will unfairly burden small business owners, in a letter to the editor published in the Wisconsin State Journal. Many small retailers turn to the Internet and sites like eBay as a way to compete with large retailers. Craig of Craigslist and other Internet "stars" have teamed up with the Open Internet Coalition to serve as judges for the "America\'s Got Net" video competition. The nationwide contest is seeking small businesses, non-profits and individuals to create short videos to tell policymakers in Washington what the open Internet means to them and why it must be protected. The Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) is lobbying Congress to give them the authority to require out of state businesses to collect and remit sales taxes for Internet commerce.
