At the annual NASSCOM-DSCI 2012 Summit, members of eBay Inc.’s Global Asset Protection, Government Relations, Legal and Information Security teams advocated eBay’s position as a responsible company willing to cooperate with the public sector to promote cyber security in India.
The Digital Security Council of India (DSCI), a not-for profit organisation and organiser of the event, has been a great eBay Inc. partner in India and this event only strengthened that relationship. Through keynote addresses, panel discussions and side engagements over 3 days of the Summit, we collaborated with key partners and stakeholders in India to reinforce the importance of fighting cyber crime.
The summit delegates, which included academics, law enforcement agencies, industry officials and High Court advocates from all over India were treated to repeated emphasis from Jack Christin, Head of eBay Inc. Global Asset Protection, and Nath Parameshwaran, Head of eBay Inc. India Government Relations, during their talks and panel sessions that cyber security is truly a multi-stakeholder effort.
“When I was a prosecutor, I liked working with eBay because eBay had always taken a collaborative approach to work with Law Enforcement to fight cybercrime,” said Jack, at the inauguration keynote address. “Most cybercrimes take place not because of a lack of technology or lack of laws. Most cybercrimes take place because of a lack of a collaboration framework between companies and Law Enforcement, and cybercriminals take advantage of these loopholes for their selfish reasons,” he added at a panel that discussed strategies to deal with the menace of cyber crime.
Nath shared a practitioner’s perspective on the importance of the newly added Safe Harbour Provision to an Internet intermediary like eBay Inc. “The internet is a new medium and the current set of guidelines is the basis of a sensible framework which is good for us to build on. Responsible online behavior is a multi-stakeholder effort, and we have gone beyond the requirements of the law to protect innocent users from harm.”
With participation from additional eBay Inc. functions, including Legal and Information Security, it was truly a company-wide effort. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate our willingness to collaborate with government officials, law enforcement agencies and industry partners in India to protect our users from the scourge of cyber crime.
