eBay Inc’s representatives Isabelle Neo from the Government Relations Team and David Napper from Asset Protection Team attended a Government Symposium in Malaysia that looked at dealing with the increasing threat of cybercrime.

Isabelle expressed that we are supportive of Malaysia’s effort in reviewing the current legislative and regulatory framework to cope with the rise in cross-border cybercrime and internet-related issues and we are willing to provide industry input and consultations to help further develop a safe and open internet in Malaysia. At the same time, we also cautioned against over-regulation which is counter-productive and has the effect of curbing innovation and the growth of the internet economy.

“Please ensure that the regulations introduced will be enforced in a way that is proportionate, such that it will stop criminal activities, and at the same time avoid curtailing the economic potential of internet and legitimate innovations”

Asset Protection manager, David Napper also shared best practices of how Law Enforcement Agencies around the world have worked with eBay.

“When a cybercrime is conducted, it leaves trails on the internet. So work with us – we have the technology, the skills and knowledge to ensure that the internet is not overrun by cybercriminals.”

The Symposium was jointly organized by Cyber-Security Malaysia and the Attorney General\'s Chambers. It was also attended by government officials from the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police.
