At eBay, we believe in the power of community and commerce to make a difference in the world. Our 2023 Impact Report showcases how we've leveraged our global marketplace to create economic opportunities, promote sustainable commerce, and foster a diverse and inclusive workforce. While we have made great strides, we aren’t resting – we are building momentum to meet our 2025 and 2030 impact goals, for the benefit of our sellers, buyers, marketplace, and world.
“Our team is committed to helping people make meaningful choices about how they shop and do business,” said eBay CEO and President Jamie Iannone. “Together, we are building a better future for our global community.”
Economic Empowerment
eBay provides a platform where entrepreneurs and small businesses thrive. In 2023, we saw a 37% growth in U.S. eBay commercial sellers in less-advantaged communities, outpacing the national business establishment growth, which saw a 1% decrease.
We continued partnering with community organizations and nonprofits that support and uplift local communities around the globe. eBay for Charity raised nearly $162 million for global nonprofits in 2023 alone, with more than $1.3 billion raised since 2003.
eBay Foundation granted a total of more than $19 million, primarily to organizations advancing inclusive entrepreneurship and through the company's employee matching gifts program. eBay Foundation has granted more than $120 million in total since 1998.
Our commitment to inclusive entrepreneurship is unwavering, and we're proud to support a vibrant community of sellers who contribute to a more balanced and inclusive economy.
Sustainable Commerce
Our commitment to sustainability is stronger than ever, and we’re creating truly meaningful impact through our work. eBay's recommerce initiatives have created $4.9 billion in positive economic impact, avoided 1.6 million metric tons of carbon emissions, and prevented 69,000 metric tons of waste in 2023 alone. We're on track to meet our ambitious goals for 2025, aiming to create $22 billion in positive economic impact and help significantly reduce carbon emissions and waste through the sale of pre-owned and refurbished goods.
“We're eager to continue this journey, working tirelessly to make eBay a sustainable company that empowers our customers and promotes a healthier planet,” said eBay Chief Sustainability Officer Renée Morin.
Culture and Workforce
We're making real progress in our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion efforts, with 100.3% pay parity for women globally. Our DE&I efforts are focused on increasing representation, cultivating a sense of belonging, and building inclusive technology. Read more in our 2023 DE&I Report.
Trusted Marketplace
eBay is built on trust. In 2023, we blocked or removed approximately 500,000 listings that violated our wildlife and endangered species policies. We also continued to invest in AI tools to detect and deter counterfeit items and to protect intellectual property.
Further, eBay is committed to ethical business conduct and maintaining safe working conditions while advancing social and environmental responsibility. We expect our suppliers to abide by the guidelines in our Third Party Code of Business Conduct and Ethics as we build a more diverse supply chain and protect the integrity of our planet.
Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, eBay is committed to building on our momentum. We will continue to innovate, advocate, and partner with our global community to drive even greater impact. Together, we're not just building a marketplace; we're shaping a more sustainable and inclusive world through recommerce.
